ACT Law Courts Project

Laing O’Rourke are presently undertaking the ACT Law Courts Redevelopment Project on behalf of The ACT Government. The project involves the redevelopment and refurbishment/reconstruction of the existing Supreme Court Building on Block 16, Section 63, in Canberra City, ACT. The redevelopment comprises the partial demolition of one bay of the existing building facing Vernon Circle, to allow the construction of an annex connecting to the adjacent Magistrates Court. The new structure has a single-level basement, which extends to about RL566, requiring a maximum excavation depth of about 6m. The project also includes deepening the existing undercroft section beneath the Supreme Court to accommodate a basement structure, which requires all the existing footings to be underpinned.

The key structural elements of the project include the new annex structure and basement on Block 16, Section 63, in Canberra City. To assist in design and construction of these features, the geotechnical investigation was required to establish the subsurface conditions across the development area and identify any possible geotechnical constraints.
